63 | Wrong Doors

Two hours later the hush of the house was interrupted by knocking at the front door. Veronica and Angel were peacefully reading before a crackling fire in the library.

Their evening together had been free of turmoil. Veronica had gone downstairs and made certain Tyler hadn’t been prowling around the house. She and Angel had walked to the girl’s home to pick up some of her belongings. They had walked in silence, peacefully, without words.

Angel had led her to the only house on Candy Cane Lane without decorations. She had wandered through the deserted living room and kitchen like an unauthorized intruder while Angel packed up clothes to take with her, a bathrobe and slippers, assorted necessities. After the walk with Angel that evening, she was glad to be reading in the library now with her legs up on the hassock, basking in the warmth of the fire. At least until the knock jolted them out of the spell.

Veronica set aside her book and slid her feet into her slippers. Cinching her house robe around her waist, she went down the house’s big central staircase to switch on the porch light and open the front door.

Standing in the doorway was Bethany White, open-mouthed in shock. With her long, blonde hair and the bright, plastic colors of her ski pants and parka, she looked like a poster for a Scandinavian airline.

“Dr. Glass!” she gasped. Instead of the door being opened by sexy Tyler Wates, her date for tonight, the door had been opened by her most dreaded professor. “But I thought—Tyler, he said . . .”

“I’m sure Tyler is expecting you, Bethany.” Veronica smiled. “His door is around the back of the house. All you have to do is . . .”

But Bethany wasn’t listening. She was staring past Veronica, over her shoulder, at someone behind her standing halfway down the staircase. “Oh, my God,” whispered Bethany, “I didn’t even recognize you.”

“Good.” Angel glared at her, bristling like a cat. Her cheeks flushed with defiance, Angel turned and ran back up the stairs into the library.

Bethany turned to Veronica. “I didn’t mean to upset her.”

“She was already upset. Good night, Bethany.”

“I’m so sorry to bother you . . .”

“Everyone gets the wrong door at first,” said Veronica, edging the door closed. “Tyler’s place is easy to find. Just go back down the stairs and take the cement path . . .”

“Thanks,” called Bethany, not listening. “Sorry to bother you.”

Matt had changed into his sweatpants and an old yellow Wooden Boy sweatshirt from the original off-off-Broadway production. He was stretched out on the sofa trying to read Publishers Weekly without falling asleep when he heard knocking at the front door.

He opened it to find a beautiful young blonde with a horrified grin. “Oh, no! Don’t tell me I’ve done it again. Isn’t this Tyler’s room?”

“Tyler is just around the side of the house.”

But she didn’t hear him. She was staring at his chest. “I saw that show in New York. It was fabulous.
